Both of these cost around $30. Both promise to remove pet hair without tape or batteries. Both have thousands of five-star reviews. If you are trying to pick one, here is what actually separates them.
The short answer
The ChomChom removes more hair per session. The OXO FurLifter is easier to carry around and clean. If you want something to keep in one spot and use hard, get the ChomChom. If you want something to toss in a bag and use occasionally, the OXO is more convenient.
How they work
The ChomChom uses a two-way brushing motion. You roll it forward and it catches hair; you roll it back and it catches more. The collected hair drops into a small chamber at the bottom that you empty by opening a hinge.
The OXO FurLifter uses a one-directional rubber scraping action with a retractable base that collects hair as you pull the tool across fabric. The hair collects on the rubber blade and you swipe it into an internal container with your thumb.
Performance on upholstery
On a microfiber couch with moderate cat hair, the ChomChom cleaned it in about 90 seconds. The OXO took closer to three minutes on the same section and left some hair behind, particularly in the woven texture of the fabric.
On tightly woven canvas furniture, the gap narrowed. The OXO performed almost as well as the ChomChom on smooth, taut fabric.
On velvet or velour, the ChomChom wins clearly. Velvet traps hair in a way that requires the directional back-and-forth motion to release it.
Performance on car seats
Factory car upholstery has a rough weave designed to grip, and dog hair embeds deeply into it. The ChomChom lifted most of it in one session. The OXO struggled with the same seat and required significantly more passes to get comparable results.
Performance on clothing
The OXO has an edge here. Its lighter pressure and narrower blade make it safer on delicate fabrics. I would not hesitate to run the OXO across a wool sweater. With the ChomChom, I am more cautious on anything that pills easily.
For denim, coats, and fleece, both work well.
Build and design
The OXO FurLifter feels more premium. The rubber grip is comfortable, the mechanism is smooth, and the whole thing looks like it belongs on a shelf. It also stands upright on its own, which is a small thing that turns out to matter.
The ChomChom feels more utilitarian. The plastic is solid but the design is purely functional. It does not try to look good. It does not stand on its own.
Cleaning and maintenance
Emptying the OXO: open the top, look at the hair in the container, try to get it out without getting it on your hand. There is a scraper inside but it does not fully clean the chamber.
Emptying the ChomChom: open the hinge, dump into trash in one motion. The chamber is deeper and the hinge creates a clean drop. Faster and less messy.
Durability
The ChomChom has a track record of lasting years with daily use. It is an older product with a longer user history. I have one that is going on two years with no issues.
The OXO is relatively newer and the durability reviews are more mixed, with some users reporting the rubber blade degrading faster than expected.
Price
Both are typically $25-$35. The ChomChom often comes in slightly under the OXO.
Which one to buy
Get the ChomChom if you have a heavy shedder, mostly deal with upholstery and car seats, and want the tool that removes the most hair the fastest.
Get the OXO FurLifter if you want something that feels nicer to use, need it to work on delicate fabrics and clothing, or you want to keep one in a bag for occasional use.
They solve slightly different problems. If you can only buy one and you have a dog that sheds constantly, the ChomChom is the right call.
